The theme that the author was trying to convey, was the overall desperation of the two travelers. This was due to them meeting with the three people of importance. They had close ups on their faces, showing how serious they were; also, of the two traveling men, one was shown as impatient as well. This is seen by the pacing back and forth.

Using the overhead shot of the boat, in the beginning of the scene, its purpose was to put the viewers focus onto to as it gradually crept into the scene.
